Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation,
In charity,
In spirit, . . .
1 Timothy 4:12
Let's take a look at the next two words in this verse that we are supposed to be examples in.
In charity
The Greek word means love, affection, benevolence. Are we loving others with the love of Christ? It's easy to love those who love us. Those who are kind and nice to us. But only Christ loved His enemies. Only followers of Jesus Christ can truly love those who say unkind things about us, who tell lies about us, who treat us badly, or ignore us. Let us love with the love of Christ! Let our love be an example to others that we are daughters of the King!
In spirit
This Greek word has the meaning of our disposition. Our temperament. Are we gloomy and glum? Are we always fearful and afraid? Are we constantly feeling sorry for ourselves? I'm sure you've met people like that. It's hard to be around them. You start to get discouraged and sad after a while. Or else frustrated and want to shake them (depending on your personality). :) Do you think others see Christ when we are gloomy, fearful, self-centered? No! Does that mean we have to always wear a smile and be enthusiastic, and bouncing with joy? Not necessarily. The Bible does talk over and over and over and over and–you get the point–about being joyful, about giving thanks, about shouting for joy, and praising the Lord. Why? Because that is what is different from the world. That is what is going to set you apart as an example of someone who follows Christ.
So today, let's keep a watch on our love of others and our attitude and disposition. Let's remember Who we serve and be examples.
