Are you noticing a theme here? I honestly didn't plan it this way, but this is apparently the message God keeps putting on my heart. We talked yesterday about being still, so today I want to focus on the last part of this verse.
You see, God is not calling us to passive submission, where we lie around like a doormat and just take what the world throws at us without reacting, or feeling, or letting it affect us. He is calling us to a life of deep faith, where through all of our most painful moments, we are anchored in the unchanging truth that He is God.
Think for a moment about what that means. He is God. He understands every hurt in your heart, even when no one else can, even when you can't understand it yourself. He is God. He knows how much you can bear, and He has promised to carry you through it and work it for good in your life. He is God. He can do more than we could ever ask or think, even when human logic says this situation could never be redeemed. He is God.
And because He is God, we can be still. We can be still amid the fear, amid the struggle, amid the pain. We can cry and question and feel our hearts break, but through it all, we can hold to that quiet assurance deep in our hearts that He is God. He is truth. He is light. He is love. And because we know who He is, in the midst of our pain and brokenness, we can be still.
When you have a chance, read the rest of that Psalm. Are you struck by the contrast? I am, every time. The world is raging, troubles press in on every side, every circumstance is calculated to make us worry and doubt and fear. But God says, "Be still." Be still, and remember His character. Be still, and remember His promises. Be still, and remember your place in His heart. Be still, and know that He is God!
