Have you ever stopped to think about just how great God's love for you really is? Oh, of course we talk about. Read about it. Sing about it. But when was the last time you really thought about it?
Look at the last part of that verse again. God has called us His children. Sons. Daughters. He has claimed us, irrevocably and forever.
Did you ever stop to think that He didn't have to do that? Set aside for a minute the fact that He didn't have to redeem us at all (although that's another subject worth pondering when you have the chance). But right now, think about this: when was there ever a rule that once God had chosen to redeem us, it also meant we were invited into His family?
Couldn't He have chosen to redeem us and then sent us off to make it on our own? Or named us something else within His household--a servant, perhaps. More fitting for the place in which He found us, certainly, although still more than we deserved. But look at what He did instead. After lifting us up out of the muck and mire where He found us, He not only brought us back to His home, but He named us His own. Not servants with a temporary allegiance but sons with an eternal bond.
Does that love take your breath away like it does mine? Like it did John's? If you ever begin to feel unloved, unwanted, or uncared for, stop and remember the amazing love that has been lavished on you. Dearest sister, you are known. You are claimed. You are loved. Ponder that. Remember that. Rejoice in that. The Creator of the universe has called you His child. What gift could ever be greater?
