Who Does the Carrying?

"Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs, I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you." - Isaiah 46:4

Let those words soak into your spirit for a minute. The Creator of the universe, the One who holds all of time and space in His hands is giving this promise to His people. Think of the might of this arm that has offered to carry you! Can anything else compare? What morsel of your own strength, or what nugget of human wisdom, could ever compare to the strength offered us in this promise?

Nothing could. And that's the entire point. In fact, if you read the rest of the chapter (which you should!), this promise comes in the middle of a section where God is comparing Himself to the idols of the nations. He gives a picture of both men and beasts laboring under the weight of their false gods and then gives this beautiful promise. Read back over the verse again. Do you see the difference? Others have to bear the weight of their own gods, but your God is promising that He will carry you!

For most of us, we're pretty far removed from the idea of having to cart a physical idol around from place to place. But think about what has replaced those false gods in our own cultures. Is it self-reliance? Worldly philosophies? Empty religion? Don't all of those involve serious effort on our part? We strain under the weight of remembering all the right rules, learning enough to break through our weaknesses, working hard enough to succeed in our chosen path. And as Christians, we often apply that mindset to our walk with God.

Do you find yourself weighed down because you don't measure up, because you can't meet the standard, because you can't keep all the rules in your mind at a time? Dear sisters, your God is not asking you to carry His weight. He is offering to carry you! Whatever burdens you are bearing today, take them to Him and let Him hold them--and you.
